Writing Options: Alphabet Work
ABC Sound Tubs![]() Objective: Students solidify their knowledge of beginning letter sounds by working with ABC SOUND tubs [drawers]. Materials: Sound Tub Container(s) to House the ABC Objects ABC Objects: For the objects in my drawers, I just went around the classroom, my home, and stores looking for small things, sometimes everyday things, to add to the bins. I found an ice cream bucket in my classroom full of little objects that were obviously used for this type of activity, but they were a mess. I sorted through them and that was my starting point. It is amazing how if you think about finding little objects for a few days, how you come up with some interesting and cheap objects for your drawers/tubs. A website visitor also sent in these links (1 and 2) to a Montessori Services Store. So cheap! Lakeshore Learning also has sound tubs.
When and How to Introduce: This activity is introduced during the first or second month of school. There are different "stages" or activities that can be done throughout the school year to give your students more of a challenge as the year progresses. Read on to find out how to differentiate ABC Sound Tubs. Round #1
Items are pre-sorted into containers.
Students select a letter container and review the contents. Students practice naming the objects in the containers: A, ant, /a/ /a/ ant A, alligator, /a/ /a/ alligator A, apple, /a/ /a/ apple Round #2 Items are put into a large container (mixed up). Students return items to the appropriate letter container. Before placing it into the container, they practice naming the objects A, ant, /a/ /a/ ant A, alligator, /a/ /a/ alligator A, apple, /a/ /a/ apple Round #3 Each letter bin contains an assortment of items, but the objects are in the wrong drawer. Students are to return the items to the appropriate letter container. Before placing it into the container, they practice naming the objects: A, ant, /a/ /a/ ant A, alligator, /a/ /a/ alligator A, apple, /a/ /a/ apple Round #4 Items are put into letter bins. Students make an alphabet chart by selecting an object from the bins. Students use one item to represent each letter of the alphabet. The items are placed one by one onto the laminated alphabet chart grid and then use the pointer to chant the alphabet chart chant. A, ant, /a/ /a/ ant A, alligator, /a/ /a/ alligator A, apple, /a/ /a/ apple Round #5 Items are put into letter bins (color-able pictures of a to z objects from predictable chart). Students create an ABC Book using a predictable chart we’ve already created.

Storage Ideas: The gray and red hardware drawer unit is from ACE HARDWARE (2003). The last two drawers house W/X and Y/Z. I label each drawer with its corresponding upper and lowercase letter for easy identification for students. The ABC Sound Tubs (drawers), are housed in our ABC Corner (center). |
