READING and WRITING OPTIONS

Writing Options: Alphabet Work

Bottled Up Letters

Objective:

Students alphabetize the 26 bottles into ABC order and then match the corresponding ABC bottle to its letter.

When to Introduce:

I introduce this activity the first month of school.

How to Introduce:

Gather students at the carpet in an oval.

Distribute 1 – 2 letters to each student.

Begin singing the “ABC SONG” and lay down the first few letters.

As each letter is sung, the student with the letter, lays the letter down.

Repeat the song to order the entire alphabet.

Refer to an ABC chart for reference when students are not familiar with letter formation.

After all letters are in place, check the order by singing the song again.

Point to each letter as you sing the song.

Distribute 1 – 2 ABC bottles to each student.

Have students look at their bottle(s) and identify what is inside of them.

Use a pointer to point to the letters and match bottles to letters.

As students lay their bottle above or below the matching letter, chant the pair: “A. Ants. /a/ /a/ Ants”

When finished, use a pointer and chant the entire Bottled Up Alphabet.

Ask students to find 1 – 2 bottles and letters and to follow you.

Lead students to the ABC Literacy Corner.

Show them the container/drawer/bin where the activity will be stored.

Have students place their bottles and letters into the drawer.

Remind students that when they come to the ABC Literacy Corner, they may do the activity.

Differentiating the Task:

Have students write a list of what is inside each bottle
