Font Sort
Objective: Give students opportunities to sort, recognize, compare, name, and classify letters. Upper and lower case letters are available for download below! Simply print, cut, and mount on index cards that have been cut in half. I make two sets. One for my felt board center, and the other for the pocket chart center. Sandpaper on the reverse side of the index card will allow the letters to stick to the felt board. I've also heard the Velcro works well, too. When to Introduce: After all letters have been introduced and when most students are comfortably working to name and identify letter sounds, shapes, and names, I use this activity as a whole group game when we have free moments in our day. Once we've played the game a few times as a class, I add it to the ABC corner. How to Introduce: Divide the class into teams of five. Each team is asked to gather on the floor somewhere in the classroom, away from other groups. I try to make sure that the groups are in some sort of circle or oval, for easier transition times when we switch game boards. Each team then receives their corresponding letter tiles. We count down from 10 and the game begins. Students work cooperatively to sort their letter tiles by letter. The fonts are "fun" and non-traditional, so the game can be a bit of a challenge, but provides good detective skills, and communication among group members. When the first team finishes placing their tiles, I call, "clean up" - and all teams clean up by mixing their letter tiles, and piling them into a pile on their game board. I then call "switch" and we rotate game boards (students move to the next game board). The five game boards are piled together and are stored in an upright position behind the ABC storage cart drawers. The zipper baggies are clipped to the game boards with a binder clip. |
