Objective:

Students sequence ABC letter with picture cards.

Materials:

Pocket Chart

Pointers

ABC Cards

When to Introduce:

The first or second week of school, I gather students around the pocket chart.

How to Introduce:

To introduce sequencing letter cards with pictures to the children, I . . .

Gather students at the pocket chart.

Distribute 1 – 2 letter cards to each student.

Begin singing the “ABC SONG” and lay down the first few letter cards.

As each letter is sung, the student with the letter lays the letter card down.

Repeat the song to order the entire alphabet.

Refer to an ABC chart for reference when students are not familiar with letter formation.

After all letters are in place, check the order by singing the song again.

Point to each letter as you sing the ABC song.

When finished, use a pointer and chant the entire ABC chant.

“A. Ants. /a/ /a/ Ants”   “B. Butterfly.  /b/ /b/ Butterfly.” etc

Ask students to find 1 – 2 letter cards and to follow you.

Lead students to the Pocket Chart Literacy Corner.

Show them the container/drawer/bin where the activity will be stored.

Have students place their shape picture cards into the drawer.

Remind students that when they go to the Pocket Chart Literacy Corner, they may do the activity.

Differentiating the Task:

Have students write a list of a to z objects.

Have students write a sentence for the a to z objects.

Have students say the alphabet chant backwards.

Materials:

Letter blocks, cubes, cards, whatever you have on hand!!

Storage Ideas:

The ABC sequencing activity is stored in a vinyl [plastic] pencil case

I've purchased these pencil cases Target, Wal-Mart, Office Max, Office Depot, Walgreen's, etc.

The container is labeled with a sticker that indicates where the item belongs (pocket chart corner), and with a title, and picture of what the activity is.

The pencil case is then stored in it's own drawer of a Sterilite storage unit that is located on a shelf next to the pocket chart.
