ABC Letter Search

Activity Sources:

http://www.fcrr.org/Curriculum/studentCenterActivities.htm

Objective:

Students to use environmental print, catalogues, magazines, and newspapers to search for target letters.  Target letters can be pre-assigned or student determined.  Students use highlighters to mark letters that are located and identified.

When to Introduce:

After all letters have been introduced and when most students are comfortably working to name and identify letter sounds, shapes, and names, I use this activity as a whole group game when we have free moments in our day.  Once we've played the game a few times in partnerships, I add it to the ABC corner.

How to Introduce:

Divide the class into teams of two.

Each person receives a highlighter; a magazines, mail order catalogue, newspapers, etc to search; a pointer, and a magnifying glass.

Partners work as a team to find the letter that the teacher identified as the target letter.

 Differentiating the Task:

Highlight vowels in one color and consonants in a different color.

Tally the number of each letter found.

Graph the number of each letter found.

Materials:

Pointers

Newspapers, Magazines, School Supply or Mail Order Catalogues, etc

Highlighters

Storage Ideas:

The activity is stored in a pull-out Sterilite Drawer.  The drawer is labeled with a sticker that identifies the activity and where it belongs [abc center].
