Objective:

A center activity that involves children in matching upper and lower case letter tiles and picture tiles that begin with the letter sound.

When to Introduce:

After students have gained a better understanding of letter sounds and names, and after they have experienced identifying the beginning letter/sound of words, this activity is introduced and added to the ABC Corner (center).

How to Introduce:

Gather the class as a group.

Give each student one uppercase letter tile, one lowercase letter tile, and one picture tile.

Begin by singing the ABC Song.

As each letter is sung, ask for the "uppercase ___, lowercase ___, and the picture that begins with the letter/sound ____."

Connect all three together.

Start singing the ABC Song again (from the start), when you get to the next needed letter, again ask for the three needed tiles (see prompt above).

Continue doing this until all 26 upper/lowercase letters with their corresponding pictures are place.

When finished, use a pointer to chant the activity:  "A. Apple. /a/ /a/ Apple.  B. Ball. /b/ /b/ Ball." and so on.

When finished, add the activity to the ABC Corner (center).

Differentiating the Task:

Have students write each letter's word.

Have students write a sentence for each letter .

Directions Sheet (pdf)

Storage Ideas:

I separate the uppercase, lowercase, and picture tiles into three piles.  Each pile is then put into a GLAD WARE container (one of those disposable ones).  The containers are then stored in a "laundry" basket along with the directions sheet (doc)  (pdf).
