Activity Source:

I thank the fine teacher(s) at Hubbard's Cupboard - -

for sharing the idea on their web site.

Objective:

A center that focuses on identifying the beginning sound for each picture and determining which of three color game pieces (math manipulative) to cover the picture with.

When to Introduce:

After students have gained a better understanding of beginning letter sounds, and have had practice identifying/naming/matching beginning letter sounds, this activity is introduced and added to the ABC Corner (center).

How to Introduce:

Divide students into teams.

Be sure each team has a "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheet.

Be sure each team has a handful of colored math counters (transparent is better).

Model for students how to identify the letters at the top of the "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheet.

Model for students how to identify and name each object/animal/thing on the "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheet.

Model for students how to cover each thing on the "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheet with the correct color math counter.

Allow time for students to practice the activity in a small cooperative group.

Add the activity to the ABC Corner (center).

Differentiating the Task:

Have students create a list of objects on the "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheet (sorting by letter).

Materials:

Letter Sound Picture Sheets

Colored Transparent Math Counters (or some other type of math counter)

Storage Ideas:

Each "Which Letter Sound Is It?" sheets is put into a sheet protector, and then all of the "game boards" are placed into a 3-ringed binder.  I add a 3-hole pencil pouch to store the transparent math counters in the front of the binder.  The 3-ring binder is then stored in a Sterilite pull out drawer.  The pull out drawer unit is stored in the ABC Corner (center) and is labeled so that students can easily identify the activity inside.
