Objective:

Students use clay or play dough to form letters.

Materials:

Clay or Play Dough

Play Dough ABC Book

Play Dough D'Nealian Outline Letter Sheets

When to Introduce:

I introduce this activity the first or second month of school.

How to Introduce:

Distribute one letter card to each student.

Distribute one lump of clay or play dough to each student.

Model how to mold/form/shape the clay to create a letter.

Model how to clean the clay from the letter template.

Model how to put the clay back into its container.

Model how to put the letter template back into the 3-ring binder.

Allow student time to work.

Switch every few minutes so that students can experience different letter cards.

Remind students that when they visit the Fine Motor Corner (center), they may do the activity.

Storage Ideas:

The letter templates are laminated and 3-hole punched.

The letter template are then put into a 3-ring binder or zipper pouch (poly-envelope).

A label is attached to the outside of the binder/pouch for easy identification.

The play dough containers are stored in a "laundry" basket along with the letter templates.
