The Sun Sets
Predictable Sentence: The sun set behind the _____________________.
Literature Tie-In: Read factual books about the sun. Read a few non-fiction books too, if possible.
2006 - 2007:
To create this book, we used Crayola Oil Pastels on white cardstock paper. We studied a few pictures of sunsets, and observed that when the sun sets, we can often see a colorful sky. Sometimes we see many colors, other times we see just a few. We decided to create a sunset that gave the sky a rainbow effect (which can happen - - and is very pretty when it does!). I demonstrated how to create the sun at the bottom of the paper, and how to create the rainbow effect around the sun. We talked about how the colors change in the sky as the sun sets even further in the horizon - making it even darker as the sun sets and time passes. We had a lot of fun creating the sun sets, and you will too! When you create them, we "scribble colored" our cardstock and then blended the colors from side to side (not top to bottom) using our fingers/thumb. Your hands/fingers will tire, but keep at it! :o) We washed our thumbs/fingers after we blended the sun, reds, and oranges. We then started on the yellows and went up from there. For the shadowy silhouettes, we drew our pictures onto black construction paper with white color pencils. We then cut them out. This was tricky! For some students with detailed drawings, I helped them to color in their drawings with the white pencil so that they could better distinguish which lines to cut. It helped some students to know which lines to cut. The predictable chart took 2 days to complete. We took 2 days to do the illustrations and text (cut apart sentences). They were about 45-60 minute sessions.

____ ducks ___ ____!
Literature Tie-In: Quack and Count by Keith Baler
2006 - 2007:
To create this book, students rolled dice to determine how many ducks would be in the pond and out of the pond for their page in the book. We used rubber ducks to "act out" the page and visualize what our pages would look like before actually creating them. For the predictable chart, I wrote all of the words (to save on time), as it was a short week, and we added the "acting out" component, which also added time. Students who were not rolling, wrote the number sentence as I wrote it on the predictable chart - - ___ + ___ = ____. This gave us extra numeral writing practice! For the artwork...we used layered construction paper. Students received pre-cut pieces of construction paper. The black and blue (sky) pieces did not need cutting (by students). Each student cut their grass as they wished, and layered that on top of the blue sky. For the pond and mud, we cut the dark blue and brown construction paper at the same time (one on top of the other) and then trimmed the dark blue, so that the mud would show all around our ponds. The ducks were punched from a mini craft punch. We used fine tip felt pens (orange and black) to add detail to the sun and ducks. All pages were then laminated (with my DUCK LAMINATOR - - 5x7 sheets) and then bound. This book took us three 40 minute sessions to finsish.
